Nearly anything can be used as an educational tool. One of the video games my son was playing sometime in the last year had characters from medieval history so it sparked an interest in finding out what they had actually done :)

I’ve never encouraged mine to play, and didn’t get them any type of game system until my older son was middle school aged, the learned with their friends. I think we should encourage our kids to be well rounded, so some game time is okay, obsessive, not so much

Video games absolutely, positively can be used as an educational tool, but they can also be just plain fun. There is value in kids just having fun, blowing off steam, goofing off, for lack of a better term. Not everything has to be educational per se. It’s ok if something is just fun. And video games are a pretty universal language spoken among kids, they give them common ground, something to talk about. Don’t underestimate their value in terms of social currency. A shy kid who can do great at a game can enjoy more confidence as a result.

No way! Video games are a time suck. The better someone is at the game, the more hours he’s spent playing. I’d like to pull the plug on the whole thing. Of course, I say this while my kid is playing the brand new Call of Duty game!

Well, video games also provide benefits to gamers, based on studies… however, anything that is too much is harmful, so it should be controlled.
