Driving

Teaching your teen to drive is hard work. How do you navigate getting the driver’s permit and driver’s license? How do you teach them safe driving—and how do you make sure they’re following the rules?

Teens drinking and driving (3 posts)

I live in a fairly small town and I feel like we suffer an inordinate loss of teens to car accidents involving drinking. I know kids are warned against drinking and driving, but kids are still getting into cars where the driver is drunk. Why aren’t they getting the message? And who is selling or giving alcohol to these minors?

Kids have always been drinking and driving (as have adults, by the way), and it seems like the message gets across only after something dire and tragic happens to them or someone close to them. In my town, the high school offers a no-questions-asked rides service. It’s helped somewhat keep the number of incidents down, but not down to zero.

People have been drinking and driving for a century, this is true. It does seem that with the ability to show young kids so many forms of information about the dangers incidents would be minimized. If you read the question about kids signing up for FB before they are old enough you may get part of your answer.
Simply put, it would seem to be… because they want to. Parents seem to have all means of rationalizing the bending and breaking of rules. Kids learn that pretty fast and don’t have the boundaries adults have developed.
Do you think that is part of it?
