Why drinking juice does a body—and your skin!—good

A few months ago, the Family Circle beauty team was given the opportunity to try a group juice cleanse, courtesy of Ritual Wellness. I did the “Seasonal Reset” program, which consists of drinking six organic fruit and vegetable juices throughout the day for three days—and nothing else. In case you aren’t following, that means NO FOOD FOR THREE DAYS. As scary as it sounds, it surprisingly was not as hard as I thought. I never really felt hungry, just missed the actual act of eating food. The juices are each chock-full of pressed organic fruit and vegetables, and are actually pretty filling.
Truth be told, I am not a big fan of “green” vegetable juices. But by the third bottle, my taste buds had adjusted and learned to (almost) like them. In between each green juice, I had another type of juice (which I of course, preferred) and included a sweet seasonal fruit juice, lemonade and rich nut milk at the end of the day.
The first day was the toughest, since I was getting acclimated to the endless liquid and zero food consumption. But each day got easier and I found myself feeling energized and awake. I even managed to get in a light workout one of the days, and didn’t feel lethargic after (which I had expected to).
There are many benefits to a juice cleanse—if you can make it through. You do lose weight (I lost 3-4 lbs) but that is really only temporary. More importantly, all of the nutrients in the juices flush out the toxins that have accumulated in your body, acting as a true detox. Meaning, the good stuff pushes all of the bad stuff out. Genius! I slept really well and found myself craving fruits and veggies after the cleanse was over. But the best part? My skin was glowing! My complexion was radiant and bright. I got tons of compliments, asking what products I was using and what I had done differently. And what a great answer I had to give: it’s all thanks to some good old fruit and vegetable juices.
I know juice cleanses aren’t for everyone. Alli, our beauty assistant, drank the juices throughout the day and ate a healthy, veggie-filled dinner. She still felt great and experienced the healthy benefits of the organic, and enzyme-rich juices. Even adding one juice into your daily eating regimen can yield the fantastic benefits for your skin, hair and body. For more information, check out www.ritualwellness.com.
