I don’t know what my 13-year-old, Nick, will be for Halloween, or even if he’ll bother with a costume this year—he may feel he’s too old, too cool. And that makes me sad. Since his older brother and sister are in college, Nick is my only trick-or-treater at home this season. In fact, this may be the first time in 20 years I won’t have a dressed-up child to take a picture of. So I’m going to live vicariously through my staffers—here’s what their kids are planning to be:

My 10-year-old, Natalie, wants to be a vet! —Paula Chin, senior editor

Seven-year-old Jackson is set on Harry Potter and his 31⁄2-year-old sister, Campbell, plans to let her hair down as Rapunzel. —Jonna Gallo Weppler, articles director

Since my boys hit middle school, costumes consist of a silly hat, sillier glasses and, if they’re feeling really crazy, a silly wig. —Lisa Mandel, digital director

For my 6-year-old daughter Halloween is a multi- outfit affair. Isabella will start the evening as either Spiderman or Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz and then mid-trick-or-treating costume-change into Ariel on land (so she can wear a beautiful princessy dress).—Darcy Jacobs, executive editor

My 9-year-old niece and 12-year-old nephew have a Halloween trendspotting mom. So they’re choosing among Justin Bieber, the Green Lantern, the Smurfs, Captain America, or an iPad or iTunes gift card—yes, their mom is creative too! —Regina Ragone, food director
