Setting Up A Raised Bed Garden

The weather has been great here in New York so we were able to set up our raised bed garden last weekend. We got our kit from burpee.com which was very easy to put together and took only about an hour. The hard part was filling it with so much soil! We ended up using a 2:1 ratio of potting soil to compost which totaled to 18 bags—12 bags of Dr. Earth vegetable garden mix potting soil and 6 bags of Dr. Earth all purpose compost . Although the initial set up of my garden was not inexpensive I know in the long run I’ll save money and it will be a joy to be able to pick dinner right from my garden!

This is great, we have a few garden boxes in the conservatory – trying to get a greenhouse effect – and the kids love picking what grows, which unfortunately isn’t very often, but it is fascinating for them to tend, then pick what we eat.

Those kits are so expensive! I bought one of my raised beds from a local builder, it is made of cedar. I built all the rest myself from cinder blocks. Of course, yours looks nicer!
You could have save a ton of money getting a yard of garden soil delivered. They usually have a special blend for vegetables. I will say that hauling bags around would be much easier than moving a pile of it!
