There’s nothing like a big, steamy mug of hot chocolate to chase the winter chill. But don’t just settle for the same old thing. Try kicking things up with peppermint for the kids, chile powder or spiced rum for grownups. Add a dollop of whipped cream and a dusting of cocoa, and you’ve got a tasty treat.
Ancho Chile Hot Chocolate
1 cup whole milk
1 tbsp sugar
1/2 tsp ancho chile powder
1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
2 oz dark chocolate (60% cacao), chopped
Pinch salt
Cinnamon stick
Combine milk, sugar, chile powder and cinnamon in small, lidded pot. Cover, bring to a low simmer and cook 2 minutes. Stir in chocolate, until melted, and salt. Pour into mug and garnish with cinnamon stick.
Spiced Rum Hot Chocolate
1 cup whole milk
2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
2 tbsp sugar
1 oz spiced rum
Whipped cream
In a small lidded pot, combine milk, cocoa powder and sugar over medium heat. Bring to a low simmer and cook 2 minutes, until sugar is dissolved. Pour rum into mug, then pour in hot chocolate. Top with whipped cream.
White Peppermint Hot Chocolate
1 cup whole milk
1 peppermint tea bag
2 oz. white chocolate, chopped
In a small pot, combine and tea bag. Bring to a low simmer. Cover and steep for 3 minutes, then remove tea bag. Whisk in white chocolate, until melted. Pour into mug and top with whipped cream or marshmallows and crushed peppermint candies. For an impressive presentation, moisten rim of empty mug with water, then roll in finely crushed peppermint candies.
