I’m a salad nerd. I love to create new ones. And I always scan the menu in a restaurant to see if it offers anything fun and tasty. But finding a good salad in a new town – or a different one in the same town – is a usually a matter of luck.

So when Alexa Andrzejewski, CEO of Foodspotting told me her smart phone app would let me search for dishes being served near where I am – not just nearby restaurants – I was intrigued. I dialed it up on my phone to see if it could find a salad I had not tried near my office. I didn’t expect much because I’ve been mining nearby restaurants for  a while. But I was delighted when it found several I want to try – and a few I don’t.

Of course, the app isn’t limited to salad. It will find whatever dish you are a nerd for – or in the mood for. All the photos and reviews are offered by actual diners. You get to see a photo of the dish and read a review of the dish before you even decide where to go.

Foodspotting launched in a new version this morning for iPhone, Android, and Windows Phone and a completely new app for Blackberry.
