On Tuesday, November 29th and Wednesday, November 30th, First Lady Michelle Obama and several James Beard Award-winning chefs, including Tom Colicchio and Ming Tsai, came together with the private sector and non-profit leaders to tackle the childhood obesity epidemic at the inaugural Building a Healthier Future Summit in Washington D.C. The Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA) which works to solve the nation’s childhood obesity crisis, hosted the summit, drawing more than 800 attendees for sessions about how to tackle this importance issue through individual and mass movement.

One of the Summit’s highlights was The Great American Family Dinner Challenge hosted by White House Assistant Chef, Sam Kass. The Challenge paired James Beard Award-winning chefs Tom Colicchio and Maria Hines against Holly Smith and Ming Tsai to cook a healthy dinner for two real families on a SNAP (food stamp) budget.

The PHA also tasked James Beard Award winners and nominees, Floyd Cardoz, Koren Grieveson, Michel Nischan and Anne Quatrano, to each prepare a three-course healthy dinner that’s easy to make and inexpensive. Check out their recipes here and make them for your own family! —BLAIR DECEMBRELE
